'RETURN OF HANUMAN' FILM STORY

Two years after the release of the successful animated Hanuman, the producers, Percept Picture Company, bring to you Return of Hanuman, which for reasons unknown, they choose not to call as the sequel of the original! One fine day in heaven, Lord Hanuman requests Narad Muni to persuade Lord Brahma to allow him to go to earth, so that he can play football with the mortal children! Eventually Lord Brahma agrees, but not before setting down certain do's and don'ts. Hanuman then takes birth in a small village in a priest's house. Wonder of wonders the child has a little tail and he is named as Maruti! He soon starts going to school, which also marks the start of his adventures with his new timid friend, Minku.Written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, the film is an engaging fare. He does manage to give the plot an interesting twist and tries to make a superhero character of Hanuman! The characters speak in Hinglish and also in the voice of popular actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Sanjeev Kumar, Raaj Kumar and believe it or not Gabbar Singh! There is also a tribute to the bullet sequence from Matrix. A similar tribute has been seen earlier in "Main Hoon Naa"! As in all superhero stories and also all mythological stories, this one is also essentially about the victory of good over evil.

The film falters on the script level though. The film is a little less than two hours, but it still drags! One feels that the second half is too long, but then there is the climax, which seems never ending! Some of the exploits of little Maruti, in fact seem repetitive. The animation though good compared to the other animation films released so far, it still is miles away from being called "good" animation. Eventually the film is aimed at children…those children to whom animation is what they see on TV…the international channels. And this one is nowhere even close! Time to buckle up for the Indian animation film makers, as being a novelty will not help time and again. This one is aimed at the kiddies and they are bound to have a good time.
